Shaping the future of GeoAI with hybrid intelligence and foundation models

17th September 2025 14:00 – 15:00

It gives us great pleasure to announce the next RGS GISRUK GIScience Webinar will be given by Prof. Nico Van de Weghe (Department of Geography, GIST Research Group, Director of the GeoAI Research Center, Ghent University, Ghent, Belgium). The abstract for Nico’s seminar on “Shaping the future of GeoAI with hybrid intelligence and foundation models” is given below. This will be an interesting and engaging seminar.

“GeoAI, the integration of artificial intelligence and geographic information science, is rapidly becoming a key enabler of spatial decision-making across many domains. This keynote explores the foundations and emerging directions of GeoAI, focusing on how it uses spatial and temporal structures in data to improve reasoning, prediction, and interpretation.

We will give particular attention to hybrid approaches that combine data-driven learning with geographic knowledge and rules. We will also pay specific attention to foundation models such as large language models and world models, both highly relevant in our context, and explore how they fit within the GeoAI landscape for integrating diverse sources of geospatial knowledge.

To ground the discussion, we will present examples from ongoing research in traffic management and mobility, showing how GeoAI supports applications such as real-time monitoring, predictive modeling, and adaptive routing.”
